ELTON JOHN NEWS ARCHIVE: June 2004

Elton John & orchestra performed in Birmingham on June 29, 2004
Wednesday, June 30 2004

Fan report by Matt Isaacs.

By the time of last Elton concert I attended, in Manchester back in December 2003, which was the best Elton gig ever, - AND I also met Nigel, I had already booked my ticket for this special occasion, knowing it going to be something special. Even watching TV footage of the Royal Opera house show in 2002, didn’t prepare for how enjoyable and spectacular this night was going to be.

As soon as Elton and orchestra came on stage, and he announced he would do five songs from “Elton John”, I was already in heaven. “Sixty Years On” was so authentic and faithful to the original; the hairs were standing on the back on my neck. “The Greatest Discovery” was lovingly played, as was the beautiful “I Need You To Turn To”.

The choir added a heavenly wall of sound on “Border Song”, by which time the band were on stage, excelling beyond belief as usual. “The King Must Die” was a real treat to hear, as I don’t think he’s played this life since Melbourne in 1986. Needless to say “Burn Down the Mission” was stunningly excellent.

I was nice to hear “Believe”, especially with the haunting orchestral coda at the end. Stunning. The playing and skill of the Royal academy of music really came across during “Come Down In Time” along with Davey and Bob adding subtle touches. When Elton announced he was going play something from “Captain Fantastic”, I thought it would be special version of “Someone saved my Life Tonight”. When I discovered it was “Tell Me When The Whistle Blows” I nearly fell off my seat. This was highlight night for me. Guy really excelled playing some funky electric piano. Davey delivered some mean bluesy licks, and the orchestra were unbelievable. They obviously had been watching “Soul Train”!

Next it was time for a “Madman Across The Water” blitz. Of course “Tiny Dancer” came first, which I still gladly sing along to. The choir enhanced this quite a lot. The next real surprise was the title track. It during songs like these you realise how marvellous a guitar player Davey is. The precision of the band was immense. Nigel was really playing his heart out. Elton sung “Holiday Inn” as if he’d met a long lost friend. This is one my favourite songs, again faithfully performed. As for “Levon”, it simply brought the house down! I love the way Nigel speeds everybody up at the end!

Elton introduced the choir, orchestra, James Newton Howard, “Who started out as a member of my band until we drove him crazy!” and the band. He poked fun at Davey’s folk upbringing. “We put him in a mental institution for 6 months”. When introducing Nigel, Elton spoke of the days he and Dee Murray backed him at all those early gigs, even though they didn’t play on a whole album until “Honky Chateau”. Elton also mentioned how much the band contributed to the forthcoming “Peachtree Road” set. He gave credit to Guy’s orchestral skills “Which are redundant tonight!”

Casual fans produced Cheshire cat grins when the strings ushered in “Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word”. “This Train Don’t Stop There Anymore” saw some more dexterous drumming from Nigel. “Philadelphia Freedom” lightened the mood up, preparing the way for an earth shattering “Have Mercy on the Criminal”. As expected “Carla Etude” & “Tonight” were both bang on the money. “Take Me To The Pilot” obviously benefited from the strings. Bob’s fills at the songs climax were extremely tasteful.

By the time “Saturday Night” kicked in, I had to go down the front, but thanks to security it wasn’t until the middle section until I actually succeeded! What a way to end a set. The encores were fascinating. During “Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me”, Davey added some really unusual BB King like blues lines. I could only hear these through his monitors, but hearing him blast away like this was a joy to behold. Through “Your Song” Nigel and Bob was added some innovative almost reggae rhythms to the track. I’m so glad I bullied my way to the stage! Elton wasn’t in a signing mood, so I made do with a set list from the stage!

Elton lifts the game once again. I strongly recommend anyone who is Elton fan. THEY MUST SEE THIS! Now all have to do is wait for “Peachtree Road” to come out ...

Fahrenheit 9/11 - Elton's a Moore fan
Wednesday, June 30 2004

Director Michael Moore's controversial documentary, "Fahrenheit 9/11", is currently taking the US by storm. And the UK got its first taste of the red-hot film on June 29, 2004, as a slew of celebrities hit the Leicester Square premiere.

While Elton John missed out on the event (as he was performing in Birmingham that night), his partner David Furnish, on the red carpet solo for the evening, said Elton is a fan of the filmmaker's previous work.

"Elton is a supporter of Michael Moore as a documentary-maker," he said. "He enjoyed Bowling For Columbine and he'll definitely be watching this new film."

Fahrenheit 9/11 broke US documentary box office records when it opened on June 25, 2004, taking £13.9 million at the weekend. Michael Moore's Oscar-winning 2002 film, gun culture critique "Bowling For Columbine", previously held the title.

Elton John & orchestra performed in Birmingham on June 28, 2004
Tuesday, June 29 2004

Fan report by Jon Blakeman.

Last night was a show for true EJ fans, this was not your 'greatest hits' package. The setlist mainly featured songs from 1970-71, opening with five tracks from the "Elton John" album then a couple from "Tumbleweed" and later four from "Madman".

At 57 his energy is truly amazing, for two and a half hours he belted out more or less 25 songs with no real break other than a drink of water! Along with the band, the orchestra and the choir it was like those early classic albums were being created all over again. His voice seems in such great shape, the power and control was perfectly demonstrated when he sang "The King Must Die" and "Have Mercy On The Criminal".

For me the high points were seeing him perform songs that have not been seen on any of his setlists for many years. Before nearly blowing the roof off with "Tell Me When The Whistle Blows" he told the crowd how it was nearly 30 years since he had sung the song, the last time had been when he performed the whole of the Captain Fantastic LP at Wembley. "The King Must Die" and "Madman Across The Water" had not been performed since the Australia concerts of 1986. With the exception of "Believe" and "This Train..." all of last night was classic Elton John 70-76!

The sound quality was very good and the performance was flawless, this was my first ever EJ concert and I am lucky enough to be able to see him again on June 29, 2004. After his usual encore of "Don't Let The Sun..." and "Your Song", Elton left the stage - but the crowd wanted more!

After five minutes of constant applause and foot stamping he reapperaed in a black tracksuit. He explained they didnt have anything else to play, he asked James Newton Howard to just start something ... then the crowd got the beat going and EJ gave us a rockin rendition of "Saturday Nights Alright For Fighting" where he really went for it on the piano at the end.

It was just an awe inspiring night for me, to see my idol live in concert, to watch a living legend do what he does best. Fans are in for a treat if they see him play Radio City Music Hall, there he will play "Hey Jude", "All The Nasties" and possibly a new track from his forthcoming album Peachtree Road, out in November 2004.

Soccer steals the show at Elton John's 1.5 million pounds bash!
Monday, June 28 2004

Elton John spend a whopping 1.5 million pounds on the annual 'White Tie and Tiara Ball' bash at his mansion but his guests spent half the night watching soccer.

According to The Sun, caviar and champagne flowed at the star-studded bash that included Kate Moss, Naomi Campbell, Liz Hurley and Kylie Minogue.

However, the guests at the party could not resist the temptation of watching England's football match with Portugal on eight-inch portable TVs.

More than 200 hi-profile guests struggled with each other to get a glimpse of David Beckham and Co in action.

"Four or five blokes brought portable TVs and hid them under the table to take sneaky peeks. At first Elton didn't notice as it was all done quietly," the report quoted a source as saying.

"But when it came to extra time the place was buzzing and everyone was jostling to see the game just as the food arrived," added the source.

Elton was very upset by the distraction but he eventually came round and joined the soccer crazy gang and screamed, "Let me see the game, it's my party."

    Friday, June 25 2004

Elton John monitored Britain's Euro 2004 quarter final soccer game via a
small radio ear piece during his formal charity bash June 24, 2004.

When Elton planned his annual White Tie and Tiara Ball at his Windsor estate, he did not know the event would clash with an important match between Britain and Portugal.

Rather than miss the game, Elton made other plans. "I just can't have a TV because the setting has been perfectly designed and planned," Elton said. "I'm going to have to walk around the event with a small ear piece on. It's just worked out like that."

Elton's charity ball, which benefits his AIDS foundation, featured performances by Bryan Adams, Mary J. Blige and the host.

Billy Elliot to Open at London's Victoria Palace Theatre in March 2005
    Wednesday, June 23 2004

Elton John unveiled his new show, Billy Elliot-The Musical, at a June 22, 2004
press conference in the best way he knows how - singing songs from the show
with a microphone, four musicians and a male chorus.

Elton sang four of the 17 songs he's composed for Billy Elliot and announced that - after a warm-up stint in Newcastle in November 2004 - the musical will open at the Victoria Palace Theatre March 11, 2005.

The songs Elton sang were "Electricity" (Billy's description of what it feels like to dance), "Expressing Yourself" (about a cross-dressing friend of Billy's), "Grandma's Song" and - the big final anthem - "When We Were Kings," where the miners head to the coal mines as Billy goes to the capital.

Also at the press conference, held at London's Royal Academy of Music, were Stephen Daldry, the director of both the movie and stage show, and lyricist Lee Hall. The shows producers are Eric Fellner and Tim Bevan, co-chairmen of Working Title Films (the outfit behind screen successes "Four Weddings and a Funeral," "Bridget Jones's Diary," "Elizabeth" and "Billy Elliot"), with the Old Vic's Sally Greene.

Elton John admitted that he was deeply moved by the movie: "I was sobbing in my seat and had to be carted out by three people." Hall, meanwhile, said that Billy's story is, in fact, Elton John's story. He called John "Billy Elliot grown up."

While no casting has been announced yet, a full cast list is promised for September 2004. Meanwhile, the technical team has been revealed. Peter Darling will choreograph, with regular Daldry collaborator Ian MacNeil designing,
musical supervision by Martin Koch and costumes by Sue Blane.

Tickets for the show in London go on sale June 22, 2004 and are priced between £17.50 and £50. For more information, visit www.billyelliotthemusical.com.

Elton John and band performed in Hop Farm on June 20, 2004
    Tuesday, June 22 2004

Fan report by Mark S. Giles.

Elton and the band performed another super show at Hop Farm in Kent on June 20, 2004. This was the last band show of this period before the much awaited Orchestra shows start next week.

In contrast to the previous three football club venues, this show was situated at the Hop farm Country park. The concert ticket included entry to the exhibitions which featured a journey through Kent's rural history. Also on the grounds was a food festival, where you could sample all sorts of home-made delights.

The weather forecast had threatened rain, and true to its word, torrential rain fell on my arrival at about 3 pm. But, miraculously, it gradually stopped and by the time the show started the arena was bathed in sunshine.

On entering the arena, it was reminiscant of the "Stately Homes" solo shows in 2000. The audience mirrored that, as they were by far the quietest of the tour so far. The only difference from that tour was that this time the stage was around 6ft 10in high as opposed to the chest high stage in 2000.

Once again, the Scissor Sisters opened the show at 6.15pm. They are quite entertaining ... the lead singer split his trousers much to the amusement of his mother who was in the audience. The group stayed behind to watch Elton's set ,enabling me to speak to them and get some autographs.

As in previous shows the band came on quietly before starting "The Bitch is Back". Elton appeared in the same attire as Ipswich, black jacket, trousers and red shirt. What has been nice on the shows I've seen is that he's worn glasses, although tinted (in this case red), you can see his eyes through them ... especially from the super 3rd row seats that I had. He laid on top of the piano before settling into the song.

The set list was the same as the previous shows, the early highlights for me being, as ever, "Rocket Man", "Levon", "Funeral for a Friend" and "Believe".

During "Alice", Elton's cocker spaniel, Arthur made an appearance by the side of the stage.

"Are You Ready For Love" got people on their feet and the signal to "rush" the stage. Although for what seemed like quite a while I was one of only four people who made the move, until the Rocket fans came down from their 7th row seats. Unfortunately, with the stage being so high it was quite an effort to see Elton, and we had to stand back from the stage ,rather than get "neck -ache".

The band really rocked on that last part of the show, Elton and the band looked as though they were really enjoying it ... and as ever although the show was two and a half hours long it was over too quickly.

Due to the height of the stage there were no autographs or handshakes before "Your Song". Another great night ... Elton flew over in his helicopter (he'd flown through that rainstorm earlier) and was away before we'd left the arena.
Over a week to wait for the Orchestra shows ... they can't come soon enough.

Following is the complete set list of the Hop Farm show on June 20, 2004:

Elton John's favorite dog is so well trained, he knows when the singer is about to finish a concert and sits at the edge of the stage waiting for him.

Elton owns 28 canines, but is always greeted by his cocker spaniel Arthur when he leaves the stage after performing during his current tour.

A member of support band Scissor Sisters reveals, "Arthur knows what song he performs at the end - and will wait for him at the side of the stage."

Elton John and band performed in Ipswich on June 16, 2004
    Friday, June 18 2004

    Fan report by Si Owens.

Having been an Elton fan for fourteen years and an Elton concert-goer for seven years, I'm a pretty recent convert to the man's talents in relation to many loyal stalwarts who've backed Elton John since the heady 1970s. I know that there have been many special occassions and events during Elton's long and distinguished career for fans to savour - Central Park at the end of the seventies, Maddison Square Garden with John Lennon in '74, and Live Aid to name but a few. I've always envied those who were present at those moments in Elton's career.

Elton John at Ipswich on June 16, 2004 must surely be remembered by those in attendence as one of those monumental events in the career of this extra-ordinary performer to rank with those mentioned above.

The adulation of the man and appreciation of his talents was tangible from this warmest of crowds from the moment Elton took to the stage. Elton recipricated with kind words for the faithful, and best wishes for Ipswich Town FC.

The build-up to this concert undoubtedly contributed to the sense of expectation for what was to come. It was a glorious day, and the crowds gathered from early stage soaking up the sun, enjoying a drink and some food and a chat with the plentiful and most friendly police presence. The occassion was taking on a festival atmosphere and when James Blunt took to stage shortly after 7 pm, he gave a set of cheerful, superbly-written music, complete with humour and sensitive addresses of the audience. Mid-way thorugh James' set, you really could have been at a glorious music festival.

Then, at 8 pm prompt, it was Elton's turn. This was one of those Elton performances which just couldn't have been any better. It was the most maticulous vocal performance I've ever heard from Elton. He was clearly in the best of moods and he simply threw himself into his set.

Every tour I think, "yeah, this time they've got the set-list spot on", and yet every tour they get it even better! "The Bitch Is Back" opening hit you hard in the face. Then they brought you down with calm melodies mid-set. Then they brought you right back up there with a rocking finish.

There were too many highlights to mention them all, but "Rocket Man" gets more and more incredible, Elton peforming "Sacrifice" solo at the piano is the most amazing thing you can hear in live music, and Elton agained loved to lose himself in his vocal ending of "I Guess That's Why They Call It The Blues".

The appreciation that Elton received at this concert was electric - and he returned the favour with interest. A read of the local papers the following confirmed the esteem with which these people regard Elton John, and the magnitude of this incredible event. I picked up two local papers on the June 17, 2004, both of which gave four-page spreads to the gig. And at last an English audience lost it's tag of "remain seated but politely tap your toes". This 23,000 strong crowd rocked and loved it.

Following is the complete set list of the Ipswich show on June 16, 2004:

    • The Bitch Is Back

Elton John Piano Finds New Home in Calgary's Cantos Music Foundation
    Friday, June 18 2004

The piano used by the iconic song-writing duo of Elton John and Bernie Taupin was unveiled June 17, 2004 as the latest addition to the world-class Cantos Music Foundation instrument collection in Calgary.

"Sir Elton John is both a legend and a consummate piano player, making his piano an extremely exciting addition to the Cantos Collection," says Andrew Mosker of Cantos Music Foundation. "Elton John's total record sales now rank third in history, behind only the Beatles and Elvis Presley, making it clear that this piano is an important piece of popular culture and will be a much cherished addition to the Cantos Collection."

The piano, which is pictured on the back of the American version of the "Empty Sky" album, was unveiled June 17, 2004 after serving the requisite week in Cantos' quarantine and workshop facility. It had previously been displayed in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum in Cleveland, and was donated to Cantos by an anonymous donor who purchased it at a public auction in Texas on April 17, 2004 for $225,000 CAN ($164,500 US).

Elton John's piano was built ca. 1910 in England and served as the primary vehicle to compose his first five albums: "Empty Sky" (1969), "Elton John" (1970), "Tumbleweed Connection (1970), "Mad Man Across the Water' (1971), and "Friends: The Soundtrack" (1971).

Just some of the Elton John/Bernie Taupin songs written on this instrument include: "Your Song" (Elton's signature song), "Tiny Dancer", "Mad Man Across the Water", "Bad Side of the Moon" and "Levon".

Over the next four months the piano will undergo a conservative restoration in the Cantos workshop - it will be viewable throughout the restoration process. Once it has been returned to playing condition by Cantos' master instrument technicians, it will be permanently exhibited in the Cantos Gallery.

The Cantos Gallery, located at 134 - 11th Avenue SE in Calgary, is open to the public for summer tours, Monday to Friday at 10am & 2pm, and weekends by appointment. For more information about Cantos visit www.cantos.ca.

Cantos Music Foundation is a not-for-profit organization that strives to build better communities by connecting people through music. Cantos provides opportunities to engage with music through guided tours of the world-class Cantos collection of historic instruments and through specialty programs.

    Elton to auction off glasses?

Elton John is going to auction off his massive collection of specs.

Elton, who has suffered from short-sightedness for years, went under the knife to correct his impaired vision last year.

And now that Sir Elton’s eyesight is perfect he no longer has any reason to keep his huge haul of outrageous glasses.

Elton, who has used his specs as a fashion statement for years, said: “They’re not much use to me now. I have just had implants — not laser surgery — in my eyes so I’ve got 20/20 vision now. All the other glasses are just sitting there. I feel another auction coming on.”

Golfers make way for Sir Elton
    Wednesday, June 16 2004

Elton John's only Scots gig has bunkered a golf final.

H is playing Aberdeen's Pittodrie Stadium on June 28, 2004, the same time as the neighbouring Kings Links course was due to host its annual championship final.

But organisers feared the noise from the gig at Pittodrie would ruin players' concentration and have decided to postpone it for a week.

One golfer said yesterday: "Imagine Elton John belting out Saturday Night's Alright For Fighting just as you're about to putt for the title. 'There will also be a huge crowd converging on the area. I think moving the final to next Friday is a sensible decision. It also means golf fans with tickets for Elton John won't miss out on a major local event."

Elton John flight alright for fighting
    Wednesday, June 16 2004

A row emerged today after it was revealed Aberdeen airport is planning to lift strict curfew rules to let Elton John fly out of the city immediately after a concert.

Planning officials will allow the aircraft to take off from Aberdeen Airport at 11.30pm on June 18, 2004, after Elton plays his only Scottish date at the city’s Pittodrie Stadium.

But other politicians in Aberdeen say the council and airport’s “special treatment” of the superstar is ridiculous, and that he should be made to catch a flight the next day.

Restrictions at the airport mean aircraft are normally not allowed to take off after 11pm or land after 11.30pm.

City planning convener Councillor Scott Cassie, who approved the request, said today it was perfectly reasonable that a man of Elton John’s stature should be allowed to fly.

“I was asked if I could extend the take-off time, and I said yes,” said Mr Cassie. “It means that Elton can play on a bit and not rush away to get an early flight. Getting someone of that stature up to Aberdeen is a coup and it is only reasonable that we try to accommodate him.”

But fellow councillor Kevin Stewart said Elton should stay in a hotel on Friday night. “My view is simple: The curfew should not be disposed of to allow one individual, no matter who that individual is, the opportunity to fly out. There should not be special treatment – I think it is ridiculous. Elton John should be no different to anyone else and the rules should apply.”

Director of operations at Aberdeen Airport, Peter Noyce, said: “We are always extremely careful that we adhere to the agreed operational criteria for the airport, but this is a one-off event involving one of the world’s leading entertainers and tens of thousands of fans and ourselves and the city agree we should do what we can to help.”

An airport spokesman said the request to lift the curfew had come from the aircraft handling agent.

Elton John’s chartered plane is expected to be a 49-seater Embraer 145 jet.

The physical move has now happened, unfortunately not just as smooth as we had hoped for as the site was unreachable for about 24 hours over the weekend.

And we would still like to ask your patience and understanding for any inconvenience that may occur during the forthcoming maintenance work. You will notice that some of the services (such as the message board or chat room) will be temporarily unavailable while we install new scripts.

We expect the move to be finished by the end of June 2004. Thanks for your understanding.

Elton John and band performed in Bristol on June 11, 2004
    Tuesday, June 15 2004

Fan report by Mark S. Giles.

After months of anticipation, finally it was time for Elton to start his summer UK tour.

My trip started on Thursday though, where I travelled to the south west of England, and Swindon where I met up with former Hercules Magazine Editor Tammi Smedley and her new-born baby Joe. In the evening I visited the Swindon Arts Centre to see Kiki Dee and Carmelo Luggeri in Concert. Kiki sings "Don't Go breaking My Heart" in her set, and tells one or two stories of her times with Elton.

The following day it was off to a sunny Bristol City Football Club and to Elton's first UK date this year. Having met up with some friends, and been interviewed by Radio Bristol, it was time to take my 12th Row seat.

Unusually for Elton, he had a support band. The Scissor Sisters (from New York) treated us to a lively set which seemed to get a lot of the crowd moving.

By 8 pm, the crowd had grown to around 23,000. As in Amherst in April, Elton started with "The Bitch Is Back". It seemed strange, as the band came onstaged almost unnoticed, until they started playing. It also caused problems for the inexperienced security, as many people were still chatting in the isles ... and once the opening chords were struck, they were reluctant to go to their seats. It meant people had to in the front had to stand for the entire show whilst people from the back came running down to be near the front. Unfortunately this was very distracting, as the main event was watching Elton's security man trying to get the local security to move people back. In the end he gave up.

Still it was not nice knowing that people with cheaper tickets were standing in front of the more expensive front rows.

As for the concert, well it was superb. It was a lively start, with "The Bitch Is Back" (and Elton laying on the piano), followed by "Bennie and the Jets" and then "Levon" which is a track not often played in the UK.

Elton and the band were really enjoying it ... perhaps the fact that the crowd was far more responsive than the recent Vegas shows. Elton spoke very little apart from the "usual" intro before "Red Shoes", but he did dedicate "Sorry Seems to be the Hardest Word" to Ray Charles who had died the previous day. Apparently their recording together of "Sorry Seems to be the Hardest Word" was Charles's last in a studio.

Elton briefly left the stage at the start of "Funeral for a Friend", and this was the start of a 'rocking' end to the show. Elton said in introducing the brilliant "Believe" that he'd put this in the set as there was so much misery in the world.

Again "Believe" and "Alice" are not usually on the UK set list. The high tempo ending was completed with "Crocodile Rock" where Elton this time sang "I remember when rock was young, Lester Piggott had so much fun".

The usual encores completed a terrific show. Elton changed into his tracksuit for "Your Song", and touched and shook hands with the crowd, but didn't sign any autographs, perhaps as the stage was very high, or as was rumored that he was flying to Nice that night.

A great show ... can't wait for the next one!

Elton John voted biggest "bling bling" star
    Tuesday, June 15 2004

Elton John has beaten some of hip-hop's biggest names to be named the most "bling bling" star of all time.

He was voted as the biggest jewellery clad celebrity, above hard men P Diddy and 50 Cent and star Elizabeth Taylor.

Bizarrely, he also beat 80s action star Mr T and ageing presenter Jimmy Saville, who both featured in the top 10 poll from cable channel Chase-it TV.

Liberace and Elvis Presley accompanied Diddy, Fiddy and John in the top 5.

Other stars making a name for themselves in the realm of too much jewellery include Beyonce Knowles and David Beckham, who has become famed for his extravagant tastes.

The poll ranking follows Sir Elton's ostentatious shows at Las Vegas, which are thought to have earned him more than £31 million - just enough to keep the star in diamonds.

    Ray Charles Dies At 73
    Friday, June 11 2004

Ray Charles died June 10, 2004 at his Beverly Hills home from complications relating to liver disease. He was 73.

The R&B legend was surrounded by family and friends at the time of his death, according to a spokesperson for the artist.

"The death of Ray Charles is an incredible loss for the world of music. He inspired so many people and his music will live forever," said Elton John.

Charles, who made his last public appearance April 30, when his recording studio was designated a historic landmark by the city of Los Angeles, had been sidelined from performing by a hip ailment since August 2003.

Concord Records has scheduled an album of duets with such talents as Willie Nelson, Norah Jones, Elton John, Bonnie Raitt and James Taylor for release on August 31, 2004.

Elton John performed in Karlstad, Sweden on June 1, 2004
    Friday, June 4 2004

    Fan Report by Tanya.

On the first of June my husband Ronnie and I, along with our friend Carola, traveled from Stockholm to Karlstad to once again experience an amazing show with Elton John. For the past two years he’s been giving concerts in relatively small cities. And this time he performed in a town with the population of only 50,000 people. 7,800 attended the solo concert that night at Löfbergs Lila Arena in the north of Karlstad. It was an unforgettable evening.

We arrived in Karlstad after travelling for almost four and a half hours by bus, checked in at the hotel and headed for the show. On our way we stopped at a local flower shop and purchased some pretty white roses for Elton. For some unknown reason we had all assumed that Elton would perform at an outdoor arena, and having had some unfortunate experiences of seeing Elton in heavy rain last year we equipped ourselves with umbrellas, sweaters and coats. To our great surprise the arena was indoors and the weather was superb anyway – hot and sunny.

After purchasing a new tour book and a T-shirt we all sat down in the 10th row. However, the seats weren’t as great as one could wish, because we sat at the extreme right. But on the other hand that enabled us to quickly run to the stage during certain parts of the show without trampling on other people’s feet.

Just a few minutes after 7:30 p.m. the lights dimmed, the "Aida Overture" music began and our hearts started thumping happily. We were about to see Elton. And when he did come on stage, our joy could not be measured. Being as shy as I am, it makes me wonder every time what powers this pianist has over me! I find myself simply jumping on my chair and rising above the crowd, while I hold my poster which says “Elton, You’re the One” and I scream “Elton! We love you!” It gives me a thrill every time Elton notices me and points at me standing there on the chair. Emotions escape my body and soul every single moment. All I know is that I do get crazy for about two and a half hours, enjoying each and every sound Elton produces, concentrating all my attention on that man behind the piano whose feet are happily stomping to each melody.

Elton was dressed in a black suit with red stripes on the sides. He wore a bright red shirt underneath and had dark glasses. Shining from his right ear was a beautiful star-shaped earring. Sometimes he would take off his glasses and gaze at the cheering audience. The show was excellent. Elton greeted the crowd saying how nice it was to be in “this beautiful country,” and then added, “with the weather like this!” Although Elton himself complained about a bad cough later on during the show, we all thought that he sounded brilliant and clear. Some of the highlights of the show were "I Need You to Turn To", which we had never heard live in person before, "Rocket Man" with a fantastic light show which one could not possibly observe from the first row as well as from the tenth row, as the lights seemed to spin and fly and cause Elton to look as if he really were taking off into space, "Tiny Dancer" with all the string sounds triggered by the midi on Elton's piano, "Carla/Etude/Tonight" and "Ticking", which all moved me deeply by their melodic profoundness and sincerity. Several songs had slightly altered endings, including "Candle in the Wind", "Sacrifice", and "Original Sin".

Swedish crowds are known for their calmness. And once again Swedes proved themselves to be very reluctant to express their emotions. Everybody was cheering and clapping, yet people were sitting on their seats even during such up-tempo songs as "Philadelphia Freedom", "Bennie and the Jets" and "I’m Still Standing". One could easily notice the songs Swedes preferred over others. When Elton performed "Candle in the Wind", "Nikita" and "Sacrifice" they were met by massive clapping and loud whistles.

After "Honky Cat", Carola and I ran up to the stage and handed Elton our flowers. What a great experience it was to shake Elton’s soft hand and hear him say, “Thank you.” And of course, after "Bennie and the Jets" we ran to the stage for good, “hopping and bopping to the Crocodile Rock.” I didn’t get a very nice spot from the start, as I was standing a little too far to the right (kind of under the piano) only seeing Elton’s feet. Nothing wrong with Elton’s feet and pretty red and white shoes, but I had to jump up high, pretty much every 5 seconds during "Crocodile Rock" to catch a glimpse of Elton’s head above the piano. In the end I could hardly move and I somehow got a bruise on my right elbow. Finally, when the song was over, Elton signed some autographs. I got a "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" vinyl signed, whereas Ronnie got his rare "Dear God" single signed. Too good to be true.

After I got an autograph, I didn’t really need to be right at the stage looking at Elton’s shoes anymore. I moved to the left, and with some people in front of me enjoyed the rest of the show which unfortunately contained only one encore "Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me". By then Elton had already changed into his sweat suit. And it was so sad when he hit the final notes, bowed and disappeared in a silver Mercedes. We’ve never witnessed that before: the car was waiting for Elton backstage and was visible to the public. Elton was driven away, the show was over and it felt as if Elton took with him our whole hearts full of love and endless gratitude for his great talent.

And it does feel sad when the show you’ve been waiting for for six months is over. However, it’s not a disappointing kind of sadness. It’s more of a wish to see Elton John again and again. I don’t think one can ever get enough of that wonderful feeling of seeing one’s idol perform all those fantastic, moving and touching songs, of getting yet another autograph and giving Elton flowers, which in my experience is always followed by a handshake.

What it feels like to see Elton with orchestra, we’ll find out next month in London! Thank you for everything, Elton.

Following is the complete set list of the show in Karlstad on June 1, 2004:

UPDATE: Brian is back (with Elton)
    Thursday, June 3 2004

Brian Wilson's first new studio album in six years, "Gettin' In Over My Head", will be released by Warner Music Group's Rhino Records on June 22, 2004.

The 61-year-old former Beach Boy recently resurrected and finished his legendary "Smile" sessions, which he debuted live in the United Kingdom.

Wilson is expected to tour Europe in the summer in support of "Gettin' In Over My Head" and possibly bring the "Smile" concert to the United States in the fall. He is currently in the studio working on the final version of "Smile", which will likely also be released through Warner.

"Gettin' in Over My Head" features guest appearances by Eric Clapton, Elton John, Van Dyke Parks and Paul McCartney. The album also includes a duet with his late brother Carl Wilson titled "Soul Searchin'".

"Gettin' in Over My Head" features a number of songs which Wilson had worked on earlier but had not yet completed, including the title track and "Desert Drive", which are culled from his mid-1990s collaboration with producer Andy Paley. Wilson's last studio album was 1998's "Imagination".

    Elton recorded with Ray Charles
    Wednesday, June 2 2004

Ray Charles studio has been declared an official landmark of the City of Greater Los Angeles just recently.

Charles built the studio 40 years ago. "I love this place," Charles said. "It's the only home I've truly had for most of my professional career and I would never leave it and I thank Councilman Martin Ludlow and his team and City Council president, Alex Padilla, for their special efforts to make the studios a special part of Los Angeles history."

The studio was designed and built by Joe Adams, Charles business manager and long time friend.

The first album recorded there was his 'Country and Western Meets Rhythm and Blues' in 1965. More recently, he recorded his upcoming 'Duets' album featuring Norah Jones, Willie Nelson and Elton John.

Elton John to perform on Bruce Hornsby album
    Wednesday, June 2 2004

Bruce Hornsby's upcoming Columbia album "Halcyon Days" features a number of high-profile guest performers, including Eric Clapton, Sting and Elton John.

Clapton contributes guitar to three songs on the album, due August 10, 2004, and vocals to the track "Candy Mountain Run." Sting duets with Hornsby on opener "Gonna Be Some Changes Made," while Elton John joins the artist on the song "Dreamland."

"Halcyon Days" finds Hornsby backed by his regular band, bassist J.V. Collier, drummer Sonny Emory, multi-instrumentalist Bobby Read, guitarist Doug Derryberry and organist John "JT" Thomas. Also guesting on the set is the artist's brother, guitarist RS "Bobby" Hornsby.

"Halcyon Days" is Hornsby's first album for Columbia, following a career spent on RCA. His last release, 2002's "Big Swing Face," debuted at No. 22 on Billboard's Top Internet Album Sales chart. Its electronic beats and looped samples marked a departure from the jazz-inflected adult contemporary music for which he's known.
