He dedicated a special country tune, "He'll Have to Go," in honor of country singer, Pam Tillis who was in attendance. Elton ended the evening with his signature classic "Candle in the Wind" as the audience waved candles in an emotional tribute to him and the spectacular performance that was simply overwhelming.

The event raised $800,000 exceeding all expectations by The Andy Roddick Foundation. Proceeds will benefit local children in need including The Settlement House, Austin Children's Hospital and A Glimmer of Hope Foundation.

Sponsorships sold from $10,000-$50,000 and were sold-out within a week after going on sale. A once in a lifetime opportunity included premier seating, a VIP reception with Andy Roddick, currently the number one player in the USA and the 2003 US Open Champion. Celebrity friends who joined Andy and Elton included country music superstar, Pam Tillis, Olympic Gold Medalist in ice skating, Sarah Hughes, actress, Lauren Woodward from the "Young and Restless," Governor Rick Perry and Pat Moran, CEO of JM Family/JM Lexus of Florida.

    Wednesday, April 27 2005

Elton and David to marry in December 2005
    Monday, April 25 2005

Elton reveiled wedding plans in an exclusive interview with Peter Willis of the Mirror.

Civil partnerships for gays become legal in England on December 5, 2005, enabling them, like heterosexual couples, to avoid death duties.

He says: "We definitely want to do it about the middle of December, probably in Windsor. But there will be no honeymoon. I'm on tour."

But does Elton worry that David might stray? At 42 he is 16 years younger than Elton and is often pictured alone at glitzy parties. "No," says Elton, firmly. "He's the most honest guy I've ever met. If anything happened, I think David would say: 'Listen, I was tempted the other night', and he's human. But that hasn't happened.

"Meeting David has been the greatest thing to happen to me. Yes, we spend a lot of time apart and it's hard, but we make it work. We phone each other five or six times a day and we still send each other a card from wherever we are."

"David's best advice to me all the time is: 'Just stop and smell the roses.' But I don't stop. I'm not one for looking back, I'm one for looking forward."

Elton John and band performed in Chicao on April 23, 2005
    Sunday, April 24 2005

Fan report by Brendan Randall Green.

Well, you ask and you shall receive. I bitched yesterday about Elton on autopilot, and all the mistakes that were made and tonight, well let's just say it was the sixth time I have seen him, and definately the best.

The show started at 8:05 again, with the Peachtree Road album (he remembered the words tonight). "Bennie" followed. The only complaint I have is I think "Daniel" is in the wrong spot in the setlist. You have everyone up on their feet for "Bennie" and the sit down for "Daniel", and back up for "Pilot". Oh well.

Everythig in the set stayed the same, and in "Rocket Man" he brought back the R-O-C-K-E-T-M-A-N, which he didn't do last night. The crowd in the Windy City was much better than it's northern neighbors.

Elton proved to them tonight why I love him, and why I should just keep my mouth shut about his set lists, and his autopilot. God Bless that man.

Following is the complete set list of the Chicago show on April 23, 2005:

Elton John and band performed in Milwaukee on April 22, 2005
    Saturday, April 23 2005

Fan report by Brendan Randall Green.

I just got home to Chicago from tonight's show in Milwaukee. First off, a note for everyone with a car, just because it is raining outside does not mean you need to drive at 7 miles per hour. My trip from Chicago to the show took nearly three hours, which is twice the regular time ... anyway, on to the show.

At 8:05 Elton took the stage and as usual did his starting eight from Peachtree road. The crowd seemed almost surprised Elton had a new album judging by the reaction he received when he announced it. The songs went by quickly, "Answer in the Sky" was excellent. However, he messed up the lyrics on "Turn the Lights Out When You Leave" and "My Elusive Drug" (It's proabably because he hasn't done those in a few weeks.)

Once "Bennie and the Jets" hit, it was all over. The crowd was in the palm of Elton's hand.

"Daniel", "Take me to the Pilot", and amazing "Rocket Man" all had them on their feet. (Although, I like the extended version of "Rocket Man", this one was a bit much at almost 13 minutes.) I got excited later in the show when he said "Here's one we haven't done for a while" but it turned out to be "Sad Songs".

Davey Johnstone decided to start playing "Saturday Night's Alright" during the intro to "The Bitch is Back" so the audience had no idea what was going on. The show was full of tiny mistakes, and the audience was less than responsive to the new material, and Elton appeared to be on "Autopilot" on alot of his big hits, however the entire night was well worth it, because Elton on autopilot is better than most people on their best nights.

I'm going tomorrow here in Chicago, and maybe all the kinks will be worked out.

    Elton's Versace charity sale
    Saturday, April 23 2005

A South African Aids charity is to auction off a Versace outfit designed exclusively for Elton John, it announced on April 22, 2005.

The costume, a harlequin creation by Gianni Versace, was worn by Elton at a concert in 1995 and subsequently donated to The Aids Foundation of South Africa (AFSA) through the Elton John Aids Foundation. All proceeds from the auction will go to AFSA's Aids care and education programs.

The auction will run online on the charity's website from April 22 until May 10, 2005, with the highest bidder being flown to a lavish presentation ceremony in Durban.

Elton was a close friend of Versace, once describing the fashion guru as his brother and mentor. Once known as 'The rock-and-roll designer', Versace designed outfits for Phil Collins, Bruce Springsteen, George Michael, Eric Clapton, Madonna and Michael Jackson.

Versace also designed stage costumes for the rest of Elton’s band, as well as stage sets and props, until his untimely death in 1997. His designs are now collectors’ items and have been known to fetch thousands of dollars on auction.

Long John Baldry fighting for his life
    Thursday, April 21 2005

According to the Mirror, blues legend Long John Baldry, from whom Elton once took the "John" for his new name, is fighting for his life.

Baldry has also discovered singer Rod Stewart who kept a bedside vigil last month at a clinic in London and is paying the medical bills of his old friend.

But Surrey-born Baldry, 64, then flew back to Canada where he lives and is now desperately ill in Vancouver General Hospital with breathing problems. Relatives from Britain have flown out to be with him.

A hospital spokesman said on April 20, 2005: "He has been in the hospital since the end of March [2005] when he was admitted with respiratory-related problems. He is in intensive care where his condition is stable."

Long John Baldry spotted Rod Stewart's talent in the 1960s when he heard him singing to himself at midnight at Twickenham station in South West London. He offered him the chance to join his band The Hoochie Coochie Men and he jumped at the chance.

Baldry went on to have a No 1 hit single with "Let the Heartaches Begin". He also gave Elton John his first break in music when he used Blusology as backing band. And guitarist Eric Clapton said Baldry's love of blues inspired his own career.

    Elton celebrates Big Mac style
    Monday, April 18 2005

McDonald's board chairman Andy McKenna summed up Saturday's 50th anniversary celebration of the Golden Arches with the perfect three-letter word: Wow!

It's a word that was echoed by many of the lucky 4,200 McDonald's employees, franchisees, suppliers and friends who witnessed a spectacular extravaganza at McCormick Place's Arie Crown Theatre and Lakeside Ballroom in Chicago. "This is just perfect," said veteran Chicago-area McDonald's owner-operator Ken Norgan. "What a night!"

What a night, indeed -- beginning with a glitzy opening program that featured a delightful speech, filled with many personal anecdotes, by former U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell. "Today has been quite a day for me," said the general. It included driving a Corvette 120-mph at the Indianapolis Speedway (he's the pace-car driver for the upcoming Indy 500) and flying to Chicago for burger bash -- after learning one of his daughters was making him a grandfather again.

Elton John was reportedly paid $1 million as the evening's headliner, but the crowd seemed to think he was worth every penny --as he regaled them with a 90-minute set of his all-time favorites such as "Rocket Man," "Philadelphia Freedom," "Daniel," "Tiny Dancer," "I'm Still Standing" and "I Guess That's Why They Call It the Blues."

Elton said that "one day I hope I play for a company that's older than I am," but shared his own McDonald's memories -- including the time he appeared at the Wembley Stadium finale of Wham! with George Michael -- dressed as Ronald McDonald, "so no one had any idea it was me, until I started playing the piano ... which embarrassed me, because the [oversized clown] shoes kept me from playing properly!"

Inside Elton's World provides a fascinating insight into the life and work of Elton John. The show will broadcast in the UK on Channel 4 on April 21, 2005 at 10.30 pm.

Following a controversial few months for Watford's most famous son - having made the headlines with his outspoken criticism of Madonna, Victoria Beckham and George Michael - Elton clears the air over the course of several heart-to-heart conversations with Sir David Frost.

Filmed at the star's home in Windsor and in Las Vegas, where he is performing his sell-out Red Piano show at Caesar's Palace, Elton looks back over a long career, picks out his musical heroes, and gives his views on the present state of the music industry, and who he thinks are the best young artists around.

He also talks about making his latest album, Peachtree Road, and the critical acclaim it has received, and his work on Billy Elliot - The Musical, which opens in the West End in May, as well as performing extracts from the Red Piano concerts, featuring some of the greatest hits from his 35-year career.

Finally, Elton embarks on a highly emotional visit to Aids treatment centres in South Africa, funded by his own Aids foundation, where he meets HIV sufferers and is bowled over by the performance of a local choir, all receiving treatment themselves.

From the casinos of Las Vegas to the shanty towns of South Africa, this film covers the wide scope of Elton's world.

Lestat Will Take a Bite Out of San Francisco
    Saturday, April 16 2005

Anne Rice's most indelible vampire character will sing in San Francisco starting in late 2005, with the world premiere pre-Broadway engagement of Lestat, by Elton John and Bernie Taupin.

The Curran Theatre will host the run. Dates are yet to be announced, but late 2005 is the promise from the Best of Broadway series there.

"Lestat, one of Anne Rice's most celebrated literary characters, is being brought to the stage in the first-ever collaboration of the legendary team of Elton John (music) and Bernie Taupin (lyrics) on a Broadway production," according to the Curran. "Based on characters and incidents from Ms. Rice's best-selling novels, 'Interview with the Vampire' and 'The Vampire Lestat,' the book is by Linda Woolverton and Robert Jess Roth directs."

Woolverton and Roth previously collaborated on Disney's Beauty and the Beast. The new musical is expected on Broadway in spring 2006, a spokesman confirmed.

Musical saging is by Matt West, scenic design by Derek McLane, costume design by Susan Hilferty, lighting design by Kenneth Posner and visual concept design by David McKean.

Lestat "is the lush and rich story of a man who escapes the tyranny of his oppressive family only to have his life taken from him. Thrust into the seductive and sensual world of an immortal vampire, Lestat tries to reconcile his innate sense of good with his primal need to exist."

When it was announced in spring 2003, the project's working title was The Vampire Lestat. "'Interview With the Vampire' is one of my favorite books and Anne Rice is one of my favorite authors," Elton said in an earlier statement. "Although this project has taken a while to come together, I firmly believe we have the right team in place. The Vampire Lestat is the first stage musical that I've written with Bernie which makes it even more special for me."

Taupin added, "Anne had always loved the idea of seeing her Vampire Chronicles set in some sort of serious and seductive musical setting and for all of the parties involved this is the opportunity of a lifetime. Our intention is make a classically-based show that is stripped of gothic clichés and that shows the vampire dealing with his damnation on a more realistic and human level. Please let me make this clear this is NOT a rock opera. Our hope is that it will be stylish, sexy, intelligent, rich and hypnotically dark."

The title character has been adapted for the screen in such films as "Interview With the Vampire" and "Queen of the Damned." Both movies drew on the original best-selling novels by Anne Rice.

    All We Are Saying
    Sunday, April 10 2005

Directed by Rosanna Arquette, "All We Are Saying" is a compelling, personal look at what makes musicians tick.

Through a series of intimate conversations, over fifty musical legends, hot new artists and music industry insiders reveal what inspires them, their personal struggles of balacing relationships and family while working on the road and the state of the music business in the 21st century.

Presented as an ongoing, casual conversation, the film offers a unique insight into the artists' most candid and personal thoughts.

Arquette, a self-professed lover of real music musicians, sets out to find out how rockers balance their lives with art, their opinions on today's music and who inspires them. Artists, including Elton John, Stevie Nicks, Sting, Steven Tyler, Mary J. Blige, Peter Gabriel, and Joni Mitchell, provide all the answers.

The documentary will premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival on April 22, 2005. See the official website for more details.

    Elton praises Eminem
    Saturday, April 9 2005

Elton John has said Eminem is on a par with music legends like Jimi Hendrix and Mick Jagger. He made the comments in the new issue of Rolling Stone magazine, where the controversial rapper comes second in the magazine's Immortals edition.

The issue features the 50 greatest figures of rock 'n' roll with appreciations written by other artists. Elton, who performed with Eminem at the 2001 Grammy Award ceremony, said he "admired" the hip-hop star.

In his appreciation of Eminem, Elton wrote that he got goosebumps when he first rehearsed with Eminem for their Grammy show. The performance attracted criticism from gay groups who had denounced Eminem for his anti-homosexual lyrics.

Eminem has drawn frequent criticism for his lyrics, including accusations of homophobia and sexism. But Elton said: "From the start, I've always admired Eminem's thinking. That's the reason I wanted to appear on the Grammys with him when I was asked, despite all the nonsense talked about his being homophobic."

"Let the Boy Georges and the George Michaels of the world get up in a twist about it if they don't have the intelligence to see his intelligence."

    Fears for Elton's finances
    Friday, April 8 2005

He is famous for his lavish expenditure. And just a few days ago he was lauded for his generosity to charity. But the latest company accounts show that Elton may need to curb his considerable outgoings, reports the UK Daily Mail.

The figures reveal that the company has an overdraft of nearly GBP 27million. The 2004 accounts for William A Bong, which is the parent company of Elton's businesses, showed a fall in turnover of more than GBP 5million.

But the biggest change was in the company's overdraft which rose from GBP 14,880,265 to GBP 26,818,728 in the space of 12 months.

Pop music accountant Cliff Dane said he believed that the figures meant Elton would have to carry on working for some time if the company was to avoid being in trouble.

'Everything is big with Elton John,' he said. 'He makes a lot of money and he needs to keep on making it. He is borrowing more than he is earning for the company at the moment and that is why it has the overdraft. He has taken a lot of money out of the company and if he suddenly stopped working he could be in trouble.'

Elton, a thrower of extravagant parties, once admitted saving was not his strong point. 'I have a flair for writing songs but I don't have a flair for business,' he said. 'I don't have any people to leave money to. I am a single man. I like to spend money.'

But on April 7, 2005, a spokesman for Elton insisted he was not in financial difficulties, saying: 'This does not affect his personal wealth. He has three films on the go, two theatre shows, a big photographic exhibition and he paid out for his tours so he is waiting to get a lot of the money back.

'Every company has borrowings and this company is no different.' The accounts are likely to improve this year. Sir Elton has written the music for a new West End version of Billy Elliot and signed a three- year GBP 30million deal to perform in Las Vegas.

Elton Sells Management Company in £16million Deal
    Saturday, April 2 2005

Sir Elton John today sold the company founded to manage his business and emerging artists in a deal worth £16million.

Elton has agreed to hand control of Twenty-First Artists to entertainment group Sanctuary. He has signed a five-year management contract with Sanctuary that will allow the company to pick up commission on his earnings in all aspects of his career.

Selling Twenty-First Artists will also bring a windfall for its two other co-owners, Frank Presland and Keith Bradley, who have agreed to join Sanctuary for five years. The deal is being funded by a mixture of cash and shares.

Sir Elton said: “I feel strongly this will represent the continuation of a very creative period for me.”

Sanctuary operates the largest global management business for music artists with a star roster including Beyonce, Morrissey, Manic Street Preachers, Fleetwood Mac, Nelly and Iron Maiden.

The division generated £31.8million in revenues in the year to September 30 out of an overall turnover of £220.9million, which includes contributions from recorded music and merchandising.

In contrast, annual turnover at Twenty-First Artists totalled £4.7million in the year to March 31, 2004, and pre-tax profits were £1.55million.

According to the Sunday Times Rich List, Sir Elton is in 233rd place with a personal fortune of about £175million.

Although Sir Elton is the biggest music name managed by Twenty-First Artists, the company has also worked with Jamiroquai and Mis-Teeq during its five-year history and recently launched the career of James Blunt.

Executive chairman Andy Taylor said: “The status of Sir Elton John as a respected and hugely successful artist is unassailable and we are obviously very happy to be involved in his career going forward.

“I am pleased Sanctuary’s approach to the music industry is attractive to artists of the credibility of Sir Elton John.”

Sanctuary expects the deal to generate cost savings from lower legal and touring expenses, with the acquisition costs due to be recovered fully within three years.
